Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has strongly criticized former US President Donald Trump's trade policies and diplomatic conduct, stating that they have had a damaging impact on the Indian economy. Tharoor's remarks highlight the challenges India faces in navigating international relations and trade amid evolving global dynamics.

Tharoor asserted that Trump's tariffs on Indian goods have led to significant job losses, particularly in Surat's gems and jewelry sector, where approximately 1.35 lakh people have been laid off. He also noted that the seafood and manufacturing sectors are facing heavy losses due to these tariffs. Speaking at a conference in Singapore, Tharoor stated that the U.S. decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian shipments, which includes a 25% penalty for purchasing Russian oil, has made several Indian exports unviable in the American market. He described the additional 25% levy as a sanction rather than a tariff, deeming it unfair since China imports more oil and gas from Russia without facing similar penalties.

Tharoor described Trump as a "mercurial individual" and "unusual president" who disregards conventional diplomatic standards. He pointed out that Trump's behavior in the White House has been unprecedented compared to his predecessors. Tharoor highlighted instances such as Trump openly saying he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize and boasting about other countries wanting to "kiss my ass" as examples of his unconventional approach.

To offset the impact of these tariffs, Tharoor suggested that India needs to diversify its export markets and strengthen political communication with other countries. He mentioned the recent trade agreement with the UK as a positive step and proposed that India should seek stronger ties with Europe, China, and Russia. He also urged Washington to adopt a uniform policy for all countries, stating that the current sanctions policy is "completely bizarre and unsustainable".

Tharoor's criticism comes at a time when India and the US are reportedly close to finalizing a trade deal. Despite progress in trade talks, Tharoor emphasized that India cannot ignore the impact of the tariffs and the accompanying "insults". He stressed the need for India to tighten its belt, explore new markets, and reduce its reliance on America.
