Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Manipur today, September 13, 2025, marking his first visit to the state since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023. The visit comes amid ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability in the state after the unrest between the Kuki and Meitei communities, which has claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands.

PM Modi's itinerary includes inaugurating and laying foundation stones for various development projects in both Kuki-majority Churachandpur and Meitei-majority Imphal. In Churachandpur, he will lay the foundation stone for projects worth ₹7,300 crore. These projects aim to provide relief and development to the region. In Imphal, the Prime Minister will inaugurate infrastructure projects valued at ₹1,200 crore. These include the Civil Secretariat, IT SEZ Building, New Police Headquarters, Manipur Bhawans in Delhi and Kolkata, and Ima Markets in four districts.

The Prime Minister's visit is not limited to Manipur. He is on a tour of the Northeast states, including Mizoram and Assam, initiating development projects worth ₹36,000 crore. In Mizoram, Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Bairabi-Sairang rail route connecting Aizawl with the Indian Railways network and flag off new express trains. He will also lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects worth over ₹9,000 crore in Aizawl. In Assam, Modi will participate in celebrations commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati.

The Manipur government has erected billboards announcing Modi's programs and issued advisories for the public attending the events. These advisories include restrictions on carrying items such as keys, pens, water bottles, and নির্দেশ sharp objects and refraining from bringing children under 12 or unwell persons.

Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel stated that PM Modi's visit would pave the way for peace, normalcy, and accelerated growth in the state. He also emphasized Manipur's importance as a central pillar of India's Act East Policy and a gateway to Southeast Asia.

However, the Prime Minister's visit has also drawn criticism, with some opposition leaders calling it an insult to the people of Manipur, who have waited for his visit for a long time. Concerns have also been raised about the limited time PM Modi will spend in the state. Despite the criticism, the visit is expected to provide a healing touch to the conflict-scarred region and give an economic boost to the state.
