The Miss World Organisation has issued a clarification following the withdrawal of Miss England 2024, Milla Magee, from the Miss World 2025 pageant currently being held in Telangana. Magee cited personal and ethical concerns for her departure, which has since been followed by reports in the British media alleging negative experiences during the event.
Magee, in a statement to The Sun, expressed that the pageant environment did not meet her expectations of "beauty with a purpose." She alleged that contestants were expected to wear heavy makeup and ball gowns at all times, even during breakfast, and were asked to socialize with middle-aged men as a gesture of gratitude for their financial support. She stated that she felt like a "prostitute being farmed out for entertainment." These claims have sparked controversy and backlash from both the pageant organizers and the Telangana state government.
In response to these allegations, the Miss World Organisation has released unedited videos of Magee's time in India. They claim these videos show her expressing gratitude and enjoyment of the experience, contradicting the recent negative narratives. The organization asserts that Magee initially requested to leave due to a reported family emergency involving her mother's health. Julia Morley, Chairperson and CEO of the Miss World Organisation, stated that she responded with compassion and promptly arranged for Magee's return to England.
The Miss World Organisation has firmly refuted the claims made in the British media, calling them "completely unfounded and inconsistent" with the reality of the competition. They addressed specific allegations, including the expectation for contestants to constantly wear makeup and remain dressed in ball gowns throughout the day, stating that these claims are false. They emphasized their commitment to truth and dignity, and that the allegations are baseless and seem intended to stir controversy.
Following Magee's departure, Charlotte Grant, the first runner-up of Miss England, has stepped in to represent the country and has been "warmly welcomed" into the Miss World community.
Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary of Telangana's Youth Advancement, Tourism and Culture Department, has responded by saying they will be conducting a meeting regarding this on May 25 and that this is an exaggerated situation. A source from the Miss World organisation dismissed Magee's claims, stating, “Miss England, Milla Magee, left the contest due to health reasons. All official events were hosted by the government, and no private parading of contestants took place while she was in attendance. Her comments are baseless and seem intended to stir controversy in what has otherwise been a smoothly run pageant.”
