As the iconic television show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi marks its 25th anniversary on July 3, 2025, the cast and crew reflect on the show's enduring legacy and impact on Indian television. The show, which premiered on July 3, 2000, not only became a household name but also significantly reshaped the landscape of Indian entertainment.
Smriti Irani, who played the central role of Tulsi Virani, shared her sentiments on the show's milestone anniversary. " Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi isn't just a show, it's a shared memory," she stated. "For those who created it and the millions who embraced it, it was a story of families, faith, and the fabric that binds us across generations. Twenty-five years later, it still lives in our hearts. My gratitude to those who made the journey possible".
Amar Upadhyay, who portrayed Mihir Virani, echoed Irani's sentiments, emphasizing the show's profound impact on his life and Indian households. "Twenty-five years ago, we began a journey that was more than just a show, it was a mirror to millions of households, a reflection of traditions, love, trials, and the changing face of Indian families," Upadhyay remarked. He added that being part of the show "wasn't just a role, it was a responsibility, a privilege, and a turning point not just for me, but for everyone who lived and breathed this world with us". He further noted the show "changed our lives, rewrote television history, and connected generations," and its echoes continue to resonate in how we perceive relationships, resilience, and reinvention.
Producer Ekta Kapoor also shared her thoughts on the show's 25th anniversary. "'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi still lives in every beat of my heart," she said. "When we started, we never imagined Tulsi would become a family to millions. Even today, people remember the title track, the tears, and the emotions it sparked". Kapoor expressed her gratitude to "every writer, actor, crew member, and — most of all — every viewer who made Kyunki part of their lives," acknowledging their role in turning a story into a legacy.
The show's popularity led to a second season, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2, which was initially scheduled to premiere on July 3, 2025, marking the 25th anniversary of the original series. The new season aims to capture the essence of the original while appealing to a new generation of viewers. According to reports, the show will stream on Star Plus at 10:30 pm. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 will be a finite series consisting of 150 to 200 episodes.
However, the premiere of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 has been delayed due to ongoing changes to the set. Amar Upadhyay confirmed the delay, explaining that "the color combination on the screen wasn't translating the way it should". He emphasized Kapoor's perfectionism, stating, "Ektaa knows exactly what she wants—she's a perfectionist. And this is Kyunki… it's not just another show. It's a legacy and she wants to do everything what's best for the show". Although the premiere has been postponed, the mahurat shoot is still set to take place on July 3, 2025, coinciding with the original launch's 25th anniversary, which Upadhyay sees as symbolic.
Irani revealed that a second season was initially planned for 2014, but she had to decline due to her responsibilities as a cabinet minister in the Indian Parliament. "If you look at the Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi journey in totality, the most well-kept secret about it was I had a contract to do it again in 2014, and I walked away from it because I had to serve in the Indian Parliament as a cabinet minister," she explained. She also mentioned that she had to turn down a film role opposite Rishi Kapoor at the time.
Despite the delay, Upadhyay expressed his excitement about reprising his role as Mihir Virani and reuniting with Smriti Irani. "When I met her at Ekta Kapoor's house, it felt like no time had passed. We were just the same," he shared. He noted that their chemistry as Mihir and Tulsi remains strong and that the love between their characters has matured. Upadhyay also confirmed that Mihir will remain in the show until the final episode of Season 2.
The return of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi has generated considerable excitement and nostalgia among fans. The show is expected to bring back familiar faces, including Shakti Anand and Kamalika Guha Thakurta, alongside a fresh star cast. While the premiere date remains uncertain, the makers are committed to delivering a high-quality show that honors the legacy of the original while offering a contemporary and engaging storyline.
