Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Trinidad and Tobago marks a significant milestone in the relationship between India and the Caribbean nation. This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1999, underscoring the renewed focus on strengthening ties with this important partner in the Global South. Modi's two-day trip, from July 3rd to 4th, 2025, is packed with diplomatic engagements, cultural celebrations, and strategic discussions aimed at deepening cooperation across various sectors.

Upon arrival at Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain, PM Modi was greeted with a warm and enthusiastic welcome. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, along with her entire cabinet comprising 38 ministers and four Members of Parliament, were present to receive him, a gesture highlighting the importance Trinidad and Tobago places on this visit. Persad-Bissessar donned Indian attire for the occasion, symbolizing the deep-rooted cultural connections between the two nations. The Prime Minister was also accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour.

Adding to the vibrant reception, PM Modi was greeted with a traditional Bhojpuri Chautal performance. He expressed his delight at witnessing this "priceless cultural connection," emphasizing the strong ties between Trinidad & Tobago and India, especially the regions of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The performance served as a powerful reminder of the shared heritage and the enduring links between the people of both countries.

During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. These discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as trade, energy, technology, and cultural exchange. Trinidad and Tobago, a major producer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), is a potential energy partner for India, and both countries are exploring opportunities for collaboration in this sector.

PM Modi will also address a Joint Session of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, underscoring the significance of the relationship between the two countries. This address will provide an opportunity to articulate a shared vision for the future and reaffirm the commitment to closer collaboration on regional and global issues.

One of the highlights of the visit is the conferment of the Order of Trinidad and Tobago, the highest honor of the country, upon PM Modi. This award recognizes his exceptional service and contribution to strengthening international partnerships and fostering goodwill between nations.

PM Modi also met with members of the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago, acknowledging their significant contributions to the country's development. He lauded their success in various fields and their dedication to preserving Indian culture and values. The Indian diaspora, which constitutes a significant portion of Trinidad and Tobago's population, serves as a vital bridge between the two countries, promoting cultural understanding and people-to-people connections.

Prior to arriving in Trinidad and Tobago, PM Modi stated his anticipation for "deepening ties with a valued partner in the Caribbean, with whom we share very old cultural linkages". This visit is part of a broader five-nation tour that includes Ghana, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, demonstrating India's commitment to engaging with countries across the Global South. Modi's visit to Trinidad and Tobago reaffirms a historic bond rooted in diaspora and shared values. The focus on trade, energy, technology, and cultural ties promises to deepen this relationship.
