Chitrangada Singh, who now plays a pivotal role in the sequel to "Raat Akeli Hai," recently revealed that she was initially considered for a special song in the first film. However, the plan for the song was dropped when the film bypassed theaters and premiered on OTT platforms.
In an interview, Singh mentioned that director Honey Trehan had contacted her for a song intended for the theatrical release of the first film. Due to the shift in release plans, the song never materialized, and the conversation simply faded away. Singh stated that she messaged Honey at that time saying, 'I've loved it'.
Years later, Singh's connection with the "Raat Akeli Hai" franchise has come full circle, with her playing a central role in the sequel, "Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders". She plays a mother devastated by the loss of her son. Trehan reached out to Singh while she was shooting for "Housefull 5", and during a meeting, she discovered that the project was "Raat Akeli Hai 2," with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte returning.
Singh expressed that she believes she was destined to be a part of the "Raat Akeli Hai" film franchise. She admires the storytelling and narrative style of the first film, which captivated her from the beginning. She appreciates how the director focuses on every moment, character, and emotion.
In "Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders," Singh embodies a heartbroken mother, skillfully conveying untold grief through subtle gestures and emotional depth. Her role demanded physical and emotional restraint. She had to remind herself that the energy of her character is that of someone who has lost their son. Trehan's direction focused on silence and movement over dialogue, requiring Singh to express pain through body language alone.
Singh also reflected on the deeper social themes present in "Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders," such as patriarchy, class divides, and inheritance politics within Indian families. She noted that these themes became clearer to her as the film took shape on set. She realized how important the social commentary was for Honey Trehan, which she considers a beauty of his filmmaking.
"Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders" revolves around the members of the Bansal family, who are found murdered, and inspector Jatil Yadav tries to uncover a trail of greed, betrayal, and secrets tied to a deadly conspiracy. The film, which is a sequel to 2020's "Raat Akeli Hai," debuted on Netflix on December 19. The film also stars Deepti Naval, Ila Arun, Revathi, Sanjay Kapoor, Priyanka Setia, S M Zaheer, and Rajat Kapoor.
Beyond personal grief, the film carries sharp social commentary. A plot point in the film involves children falling sick due to a poisonous gas leaked from a factory. For Singh, who is a mother, it hit home. Singh is also set to appear in "Battle of Galwan".
