Neeraj Ghaywan's "Homebound," India's official entry for the 98th Academy Awards, has been knocked out of the Oscar race for Best International Feature Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations on Thursday, January 22, 2026, revealing that "Homebound" did not secure a spot among the final nominees.

The film, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, and Apoorva Mehta, had garnered significant attention and was included in the shortlist of 15 films. "Homebound" explores the journey of two childhood friends, Shoaib (Ishaan Khatter) and Chandan (Vishal Jethwa), who aspire to join the police force. Janhvi Kapoor also stars in the film. The story unfolds during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

The final nominees for Best International Feature Film are "The Secret Agent" from Brazil, "It Was Just an Accident" from France, "Sentimental Value" from Norway, "Sirat" from Spain, and "The Voice of Hind Rajab" from Tunisia.

Following the announcement, Karan Johar took to Instagram to express his support for Neeraj Ghaywan. Sharing stills from "Homebound," Johar wrote, "Proud!!!! Love you @neeraj.ghaywan for allowing us to bask in your light! #homebound," signaling his continued support despite the film missing out on an Oscar nod. Ghaywan responded by reposting Johar's story, writing, "Thank you, @karanjohar! You have been an absolute rock. Couldn't have come this far without you. Love you".

Vishal Jethwa, who plays Chandan in the film, told Hindustan Times that being shortlisted among the final 15 films was an honor. "Seeing 'Homebound' travel this far and represent India globally has been incredibly special. I will forever be grateful to have been part of this film," he said. While admitting to having some expectations, Jethwa added, "Even though we say that we should not expect anything, but ab jab itna aage aa gaye the to thoda expectations to thi. No matter how many people saw the film, they liked it and called it a strong story and that in itself feels like an achievement". He reflected on his personal growth during the film's journey, noting that the experience, from shooting to campaigning and attending film festivals, had changed him a lot.

"Homebound" premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival in May 2025, where it received critical acclaim. Dharma Productions later joined the project as a presenter and eventually became its producer. The film was released in India on September 26, 2025, receiving positive reviews from audiences and critics.

With "Homebound" out of the race, India's wait for an Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category continues. The last Indian film to be nominated in this category was Aamir Khan's "Lagaan" in 2001.

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
