Newcastle United's preparations for their crucial Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain have been potentially hampered by an injury concern surrounding key midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian international is doubtful for the trip to Paris, leaving manager Eddie Howe with a selection headache in the center of the pitch.
Guimaraes sustained an ankle injury during the first half of Newcastle's 3-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday. He was replaced by Lewis Miley. Howe described Guimaraes as a "big miss" in their recent game against Aston Villa.
Howe provided an update on Guimaraes' condition, stating, "We still don't think Bruno is a serious injury. He'll do all he can to be fit for Wednesday. But he has to be right to play". Howe had previously mentioned that Guimaraes was experiencing some soreness and swelling around his ankle. He also admitted his worry about Guimaraes having to come off during the PSV match, as the midfielder "never wants to come off".
The Newcastle manager acknowledged the significance of Guimaraes to the team, stating that they missed his "ability to pass forward" in their recent match. Howe recognizes Guimaraes's qualities, noting how he "always wants the ball and he's always demanding the ball from his teammates". Despite Guimaraes' importance, Howe insisted that the team "have to be able to play without him as well and hope we don't have to do that for too long".
Adding to Newcastle's woes, Joelinton is also doubtful for the PSG game after suffering a groin injury. Joelinton was withdrawn early in the second half of the Aston Villa defeat. Howe acknowledged the potential double blow of missing both Guimaraes and Joelinton.
In addition to Guimaraes and Joelinton, Newcastle faces a lengthy injury list. Fabian Schar is out until April following ankle surgery, while Valentino Livramento is sidelined with a hamstring injury until March. Emil Krafth is also out with a knee injury. However, there is some positive news, with Jacob Murphy potentially returning from a hamstring injury and Dan Burn recovering from a chest contusion.
Newcastle will fly to Paris on Tuesday to continue their preparations for Wednesday's match. The game is crucial for Newcastle's chances of finishing in the top eight of the Champions League league phase.
PSG also has injury concerns. Matvey Safonov, Fabian Ruiz and Joao Neves are doubtful, while Lee Kang-in and Nuno Mendes are questionable.
