Anupam Kher has recently spoken about his disappointment after his film, Tanvi The Great, was overshadowed by the success of Saiyaara, a romantic drama produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF). Both films were released on the same day, and while Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri and starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, became a major box office hit, Tanvi The Great struggled to find an audience.

Kher revealed that he dedicated four years to Tanvi The Great, including a year of writing and a year on music. He also introduced a new actor from his acting school in the film, and around 200 people worked on the project. The film faced financial hurdles when its initial financier backed out a month before release. Kher then reached out to friends who were doctors and lawyers to gather funds. Despite these challenges, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was screened in New York, where Robert De Niro watched part of it and praised it. It was also shown to the President of India.

Saiyaara reportedly earned ₹569.75 crore worldwide, while Tanvi The Great collected approximately ₹2.54 crore. Kher admitted that the timing of Tanvi The Great's release proved detrimental. He explained that audiences were eager for a teenage love story, which Saiyaara provided. He also noted the industry practice where a film can be removed from theaters if another film is performing exceptionally well. He stated that the situation "depressed" him and made him "very sad," not only for himself but also for the new actor and the entire crew.

Despite the box office outcome, Kher expressed gratitude that Saiyaara belonged to the Chopra family, with whom he has a long-standing relationship in the film industry, stating that it would have been more painful if the film belonged to someone else. When asked which film's success surprised him the most, Kher pointed to Saiyaara.

Tanvi The Great tells the story of Tanvi Raina, a 21-year-old autistic woman, played by Shubhangi Dutt, who aims to join the army to fulfill her late father's dream. The film also features Iain Glen, Jackie Shroff, Pallavi Joshi, Arvind Swami, and Nassar. Some critics praised the acting but found the film's execution disappointing.

Notably, Saiyaara has faced accusations of being a copy of the 2004 Korean film A Moment to Remember. Some viewers have pointed out striking similarities in plot, shot composition, musical cues, and dialogue delivery. Despite this controversy, Saiyaara has been appreciated for its performances and music.
