New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate a year-long nationwide commemoration of the 150th anniversary of "Vande Mataram," India's national song, on November 7, 2025. The event will take place at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) stated that Modi will also release a commemorative stamp and coin to mark the occasion. The celebrations will include a mass singing of the full version of "Vande Mataram" at 9:50 AM across public places, encouraging participation from all segments of society.
The song "Vande Mataram," penned by Bankimchandra Chatterji on November 7, 1875, during Akshaya Navami, first appeared in the literary journal "Bangadarshan" as part of his novel "Anandamath". It invokes the Motherland as a symbol of strength, prosperity, and divinity, and it quickly became an enduring symbol of devotion to the nation, capturing the spirit of unity and self-respect during India's awakening.
The Union Cabinet approved the nationwide celebrations on October 1 with the goal of connecting citizens, especially students and youth, with the song's revolutionary spirit. The aim is to engrave the song's legacy in the hearts of future generations and pay tribute to its eternal message.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that "Vande Mataram" will be collectively sung across the country on November 7, coinciding with the event in Delhi. Celebrations are planned at 150 sites of national significance, including the Kargil War Memorial, Cellular Jail, Swaraj Ashram, Shaheed Smarak Park, and Namo Ghat. Similar events are scheduled at approximately 1,100 locations in West Bengal.
BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh mentioned the party will organize programs at district and state levels from November 7 to November 26, coinciding with Constitution Day, to commemorate the 150th anniversary. These events will include a pledge to promote the use of made-in-India products.
In his monthly "Mann Ki Baat Radio" address, Modi stated that "Vande Mataram" depicts a vibrant and magnificent image of India and urged citizens to make the song's 150th year memorable by carrying forward its values. He mentioned that numerous programs related to "Vande Mataram" would be organized throughout the country.
The BJP is also celebrating the 150th anniversary of tribal hero Bhagwan Birsa Munda's birth, aiming to fortify the Indian cultural scene and unify people with a sense of patriotism.
