Following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, Madhya Pradesh's draft electoral rolls have been updated, revealing a significant reduction of 42.74 lakh voters. This substantial deletion, representing 7.45% of the initial 5,74,06,143 registered voters, is attributed to deaths, migration, and duplicate entries. The final electoral roll is slated for publication on February 21, 2026.
The enumeration drive, lasting 44 days, was one of the most extensive electoral roll revisions recently undertaken in the state. Over 65,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) conducted door-to-door verification across Madhya Pradesh's cities, towns, and villages, commencing on November 4 and concluding on December 18 after an extension granted by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
According to election officials, the removals included 8.46 lakh voters confirmed to be deceased, 31.51 lakh who had moved from their registered addresses, and 2.77 lakh instances of duplicate entries. Joint Chief Electoral Officer Ram Pratap Singh Jadon stated that the current voter count in the state, as of December 23, 2025, stands at 5,31,31,983, a decrease from the 5,74,06,143 recorded on October 27, 2025.
In addition to the deletions, the SIR identified approximately 8.40 lakh "unmapped" voters whose details could not be matched with records from the 2003 Special Intensive Revision. These voters will be issued notices by BLOs and given seven days to produce the necessary documentation. Failure to comply may result in their names being removed when the final rolls are published.
Authorities have emphasized that the process is still provisional, and no deletion is final at this stage. The "Claims and Objections" period, running from December 23, 2025, to January 22, 2026, allows voters to seek inclusion, correction, or restoration of names. Electors can also appeal to the district magistrate and then to the Chief Electoral Officer under the Representation of the People Act, 1950. The Election Commission has encouraged voters to carefully verify their details during this period to ensure accuracy and prevent eligible voters from being excluded.
Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari claimed that these "ineligible" voters had affected the results of the 2023 Assembly elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party secured 30 lakh more votes than Congress.
