Barry Trotz's tenure as the Nashville Predators' general manager, which began on February 27, 2023, is coming to an end after three seasons. Trotz, who took over from David Poile on July 1, 2023, will remain with the organization as an advisor after a successor is found. While his time as GM was shorter than his 1998-2014 run as the team's first head coach, several key decisions defined his leadership.
One of the most notable aspects of Trotz's time as GM was his aggressive approach to free agency in 2024. He oversaw the signing of veteran players Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei, who had all won Stanley Cups. This move was intended to elevate the Predators into a stronger contender, but the team underperformed in the 2024-2025 season, missing the playoffs with 52 losses. These acquisitions, totaling $100 million, placed a significant burden on the team's salary cap. The long-term contracts, extending through the 2027-2028 season, committed $21 million to these three players alone, limiting the team's financial flexibility.
Another key move was the acquisition and extension of defenseman Nicolas Hague, signed through the 2028-2029 season with a $5.5 million average salary. This further contributed to the team's cap constraints, bringing the total commitment to these four players to $26.5 million. While Trotz's spending aimed to accelerate the Predators' competitiveness, the strategy largely backfired, leaving the team with limited financial maneuverability.
However, not all of Trotz's decisions were viewed negatively. He signed star goalie Juuse Saros to an eight-year extension with an average salary of $7.74 million. Saros has been a top goaltender in the NHL and a cornerstone for the Predators. This move was widely praised as securing a vital asset for the team's future.
Trotz's decision to step down as GM, which he communicated to majority owner Bill Haslam in December 2025, was motivated by a desire to focus on family. Despite the team's struggles and his departure, Trotz believes the Predators have a strong foundation with players like Roman Josi, Filip Forsberg, and Juuse Saros. He hopes his work will contribute to the team's continued success under new leadership. Trotz will continue to make decisions for the Predators until the NHL trade deadline on March 6. He will also consider the futures of Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei.
