Celtic Football Club is poised to confirm the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with former Celtic manager Martin O'Neill announcing that the 32-year-old midfielder will undergo a medical on Saturday. The ex-Arsenal and Liverpool player, who has been capped 35 times for England, has been without a club since departing Turkish side Besiktas in August.
O'Neill, currently at Celtic, revealed that he spoke with Oxlade-Chamberlain on Friday, stating, "I think he wants to come and I think he's coming". The Celtic boss also acknowledged the player likely had multiple offers on the table, even suggesting the possibility of Arsenal, where Oxlade-Chamberlain has been training, potentially offering him a deal due to injury concerns. O'Neill expressed his delight that the player has chosen to come to Celtic.
The anticipated deal is reportedly a short-term agreement that will see Oxlade-Chamberlain join the Hoops for the remainder of the season, after which both parties will re-evaluate the situation. A verbal agreement is already in place for the midfielder, who is expected to sign a six-month deal with an option to extend.
Despite the imminent arrival of the experienced midfielder, Celtic fans will be disappointed to learn that Oxlade-Chamberlain will not be eligible to play in the Europa League. The deadline for squad registration passed on February 5th, meaning he will only be able to participate in domestic competitions. This almost derailed the deal, as the midfielder was unhappy about missing out on European football. It is understood that Celtic were looking to offer him a contract until the end of the season, and his representatives were looking for a longer deal. However, the former Premier League star has agreed to a six-month contract.
O'Neill conveyed his hope that Oxlade-Chamberlain will pass his medical and officially sign with the club. He further added, "This boy is here to try and play and try and get into the team and try and get as fit as possible as quickly as possible". He also stated that it would be nice to have him with the squad for at least a couple of months.
Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that Celtic have reached a full agreement to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain. This transfer offers Oxlade-Chamberlain a swift return to European football after several months without a club. If all proceeds as planned, Oxlade-Chamberlain could potentially make his debut on February 19 against VfB Stuttgart in the first leg of the play-offs.
